"Late Harvest" ... my most recent work.

New Painting: "Late Harvest"

Creating the painting "Late Harvest" was most enjoyable.  There is something about the interaction of the copper pan on it's side --- that rich, warm color, and the bright, green apples --- cool and ripe for the picking.  This is not the first, nor will it be the last time I have teamed up copper with green apples.  They seem to bring out the best in each other.  The copper pan is sitting on an old cutwork embroidery linen piece, which I believe softens the image somewhat.

"Late Harvest" is an original oil painting on 14" x 11" canvas.
In addition, "Late Harvest" was selected as part of the FAV15% (jury's favorite 15% of the entries) in the March 2010 FineArtViews Painting competition through Fine Art Studio Online.

"Market Prize" is my latest creation ...

I discovered this clay bean pot at the Mexican market in Juarez, Mexico, many years ago.  This was long before the airlines were strict about what you carried onto the plane with you ~ I held this fragile pot in my lap all the way home.  Since then, it has starred in many of my paintings, and all but one have sold. Despite its humble appearance and quirky construction, (the bottom is round), it has immense character.  It allows me the joy of painting with earth colors, regardless of whether I choose subtle or vibrant, which is always a special pleasure.

"Market Prize" is an original pastel painting on Wallis Archival Support.  11" x 14"

This pastel painting is called "Now Showing" ... the blooms did not last long.

"Now Showing"

"Now Showing" is one of the few floral paintings that I tackle every once in a while as a change of pace from my usual still life set ups.  When I am inspired by especially beautiful flowers, I can't resist capturing them on paper or canvas.  With flowers, I have my choice of using oils, pastels, or colored pencils.  This time I chose pastels.  These azaleas were solid white - so the challenge I faced was to depict them with gentle tints of color (mostly lavenders, blues, pinks, and yellows) and to save the white for areas that I really wanted to pop.  Painting them all white would have been bland and boring, therefore the trick was to use just enough color so that they read as white, as opposed to lavender flowers.

"Temptation" features perfect red grapes ripe for the picking.

"Temptation" is an original oil painting on canvas featuring red grapes and a green ceramic bowl.  Specifically, the colors in the painting are complements on the color wheel:  red-violet and yellow-green --- therefore, they are especially eye-catching.  Working with color complements is one of my favorite ways to create a powerful painting that grabs the attention of the viewer, not to mention just fun to paint.  And grapes have a fascination for me with their colorful light-reflecting orbs that also pick up nearby colors. The foreground and background of this painting were meant to dissolve away and impart an Old World feel to the still life.
