This is "Riley" - I spotted him with his owner one day and asked if I could take a few pictures with the intention of doing a pastel portrait of him. I've always had a fascination for Shelties, as they seem to be intelligent as well as huggable. Pastel is a unique medium in that it does an excellent job of depicting the hair of pets. Almost like a "colored stick of fur" just waiting to be stroked on the animal. The first thing I finish when I do a pet portrait is the eyes because it's fun to have those eager eyes watching me as I complete the painting, urging me on. "Riley" was a delight to paint.
